HSBC International has linked with Eco-Schools programme to create a new initiative that aims to empower students as active contributors in reducing carbon emissions. Using the 7-steps methodology, the initiative is focused on tackling climate change. The ‘Climate Initiative’ has been running in Ireland for 3 years with selected schools from the greater Dublin region. The new initiative also allows for HSBC Ireland employees to aid schools with their Green-School programme where possible. Along with this schools are able to share their best practices through the initiative’s website, so that schools facing similar challenges can benefit from the experience of others.
Schools around Ireland have been run various climate change awareness campaigns over the past few years. Star of the Sea B.N.S ran a science action day at the start of the month, informing parents, neighbors and students about sustainable energy and a range of environmental issues. Stephanie from HSBC Ireland was able attended the event to lend her support to school and was very impressed with huge amount of work put into the day from everybody involved.
This month also marked St. Colmcille’s S.N.S. biannual song contest. St. Colmcille S.N.S. have been working on the ‘Climate Initiative’ for the past two years and dedicated their song contest to raising awareness about climate change. Pupils who wished to enter wrote and performed a song with lyrics about climate change. With over 75 entries from the whole school body it was a very difficult task to put forward only 14 entries to the final. Congratulations to all acts who took part and a special congratulation to the ‘Climate Changers’ who won the overall contest with their song ‘Save Energy Tonight’.
Eco-Schools involved in the initiative will also be invited to participate in the HSBC Best Action Poster Competition. Closing date for entries is the 30th March 2012.
