Green-Schools Travel (The fourth theme in the Green-Schools Programme) has just completed another round of cycle parking installations at 33 schools throughout the country. The 33 installations equate to 540 spaces of secure parking for schools. Schools that are actively participating on the Travel theme, have the opportunity to apply for a grant to have cycle parking installed at their schools. .
Schools must demonstrate a strong commitment to the promotion of cycling to and from school. They must include a copy of their action plan, showcasing what cycling actions they have planned during the course of the Travel theme and beyond, along with letters of support in promoting cycling from the school, including the Parents Association. Once the parking has been installed, the schools usually hold a day of celebration/launch event, with lots of cycling activities being organised by Green-Schools Committees, with support from their Travel Education Officers.
Schools find it easier to promote cycling once secure cycle parking is available. The provision of cycle parking to schools goes a long way in developing a long term sustainable modal shift away from the car to the bicycle. The grants are made possible with thanks to the ongoing support of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DoTTAS) and the National Transport Authority (NTA). Since 2008, Green-Schools Travel has installed parking at 160 schools, which equates to 3200 spaces of secure parking.
