Eco-Schools from across Northern Ireland and a selection of Green-Schools from the Republic gathered in the Newry on 2nd February 2012 to celebrate their achievements. The packed event, which was supported by the Department of the Environment and sponsored by Newry and Mourne District Council, attracted over 500 people who participated in workshops and activities and honoured the 800th school to join the Eco-Schools programme with an award.
The event included presentation of awards to the winners of the Green-Schools video competition, Holy Cross College, Cookstown and Ursuline College, Sligo. The all-island video competition encouraged secondary school students from Green/Eco-Schools to produce a short video on an environmental topic of their choice and was run by An Taisce and Tidy Northern Ireland, and sponsored by Irish Environment magazine.
The exciting, fun-filled day offered pupils an array of environmental activities, performances and interactive exhibitions including ‘ask the expert’ sessions and a special guest appearance from Northern Ireland’s very own mentalist and star of the hit TV series, David Meade, who entertained everyone with his amazing mind-reading skills.
