Shandrum National School

Shandrum N.S. is a 6 teacher school co-educational primary school, with 165 pupils, in the village of Newtownshandrum, Co. Cork. It is located approximately 5 kilometres outside the town of Charleville in North Cork. Staff also include two special education teachers and two special needs assistants.

The first Green Flag award is all about recycling. We have been working hard in the hope of receiving our Green Flag. All the children, teachers and parents are involved.

Each class now has three separate bins for sorting our rubbish:

  • a recycling bin for paper, card and recyclables

  • a litter bin for non-recyclable rubbish.

  • a compost bin for fruit peelings and pencil sharpenings.

The children are encouraged to 'stay green' around the school, at home and in the wider environment.

We have a Green schools committee consisting of teachers, parents, staff and eight pupils from second to sixth class and our caretaker also attends. The students on the committee act as litter wardens on the yard monitoring the rubbish. All classroom bins are also monitored and the best class gets ‘Class of the Week’ which means 15 minutes extra break time!

Our Green School committee works hard to keep the school clean, but of course all the pupils help too. Even the youngest of classes help to recycle.

Our Green Code: BINS

Bring your rubbish to the bin.
In the compost put your skins.
Never throw rubbish on the ground.
So now there's smiles all around.
