Colaiste Cholmcille is a large secondary school in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal with over 670 stduents and 60 teachers. The committee (Green-Schools Council) comprises 30 students from 1st to 6th year, including TY classes. These members were elected onto the committee by their fellow class students. They were voted in on the basis that they would act as responsible representatives for the group. The committee also consists of 5 teachers, the principal and vice principal.
An election was carried out among the "Full Green-Schools Council" and seven students were awarded various positions in the executive council, including Chairperson, Assistant Chairperson, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, P.R.O., and Treasurer. The council was divided into five sub-groups. A specific task was assigned to each of these committees and one member of the executive committee was directed to chair each of the groups. The sub-groups are Audit Group, Action Plan, Funding Group, Publicity, and Student Council Presentation.
The "Full Green-Schools Council" meets together for a formal meeting once every term. An informal meeting of the executive council takes place weekly in order to update the members on important, upcoming events and to examine their progress. A formal meeting of the executive council is called once every month in which each executive council member makes a formal presentation of their group’s actions.
As regards waste & litter, some of the things Coláiste Cholmcille is doing include:
Recycle paper, cans, plastic, magazines, clothes, ink cartridges, batteries, and mobile phones.
Compost organic fraction of waste.
Students monitor the amount of waste going to landfill and recyclables collected
Implement garden plan by assigning small groups to sections of school garden. Benches and bird feeders made in woodwork class. Trees, hedges and flowers planted.
