Colaiste Iascaigh Secondary School, Easkey, Co. Sligo

"The Green-Schools Biodiversity theme has benefited our school in a number of ways. Students now take greater pride in the school and its surrounding environment now that they understand the benefits of biodiversity. Furthermore, the level of cross curricular involvement meant the momentum of the campaign was never lost. The cross curricular involvement was commented on in a subject inspection report from The Department of Education."

Burriscarra National School, Claremorris, Co. Mayo

"The Biodiversity theme was without doubt the most enjoyable. When we started we didn’t understand what the word meant, now even the youngest pupils are familiar with the word. As we were a pilot school for this theme we couldn’t consult with other schools to get ideas so it was totally left to ourselves and the tremendous help we received from An Taisce’s Green Team. One of the reasons Biodiversity is so enjoyable is because it is unlimited, unlike the other themes to date.

One of the main benefits is the change in attitude and level of interest among children. They no longer have a fear of creatures such as bats because of their positive experience when we went to the bat habitat. They also have a great respect for the natural environment and are noticing more things outside the school.
