Green-Schools  Climate Change

Introduction

Overview

In this section information is given on the different aspects of Climate Change, including the causes, the evidence, and the present and future impacts of such changes.

The topic of Climate Change, and in particular the measuring of carbon dioxide, is not a specific theme for the Green-Schools programme. However, it does provide an excellent oportunity to tie together individual themes, in particular those of Litter & Waste, Energy, and Travel.

There are many factors, both natural and man-made, that have an impact on climate change besides greenhouse gases, and there are many other greenhouse gases besides CO2 that affect global warming. However, CO2 makes up a very large percentage of greenhouse gas emissions. As well as this, of the different greenhouse gasses CO2 is easiest to measure, be it for present levels or when estimating levels in the past. Estimating CO2 emissions is therefore one of the best methods we have at calculating our own impact on climate change. As well as providing information on CO2 and Climate Change, a simple CO2 Calculator has been designed and provided for you to use in the school and/or in the home. Many links are also provided to sites of interest and further information.

We would ask schools, in particular those who have already renewed their flag one or more times, to look at bringing in the topic of Climate Change and in particular the reduction of CO2 emissions as a way of consolidating your hard work on the themes implemented so far.
