In January 2006, the Green-Schools Office in partnership with East Cork Area Development (ECAD) initiated a one year pilot programme for schools on Great Island (Cobh), Co. Cork.
This pilot has involed the appointment of a part-time local area Green-Schools co-ordinator to provide on the ground support to all the schools on Cobh-Great Island participating or wishing to participate in Green-Schools. This pilot is being funded by East Cork Area Development and the Green-Schools office under the National Development Plan 2000-2006.
The overall aims of the pilot has been to get more schools involved in Green-Schools, to get more Green-Flags flying on Great Island and to harness the positive impact on the area from this. The the pilot has been very successful to date and is supported by Cobh Town Council and Cork County Council.
Much of the work to date has involved teacher and student training, provision of relevant local information on environmental management and resources and the develoment of a best practice network for schools. Most of this work is delivered through seminars, workshops and school visits.
Some of the participants at a very succesful workshop that took place at the Lifetime Lab in Cork in March 2006.
If this pilot proves to be successful it will be extended to the whole of East Cork and Cobh Great Island will be used as a best-practise example. To find what has been going on recently click here.
